PUNE: A group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) under Pune Nagrik Sanghatana (PNS) has appealed citizens and activists to contest civic general election 2012 as its candidates.
Fuelled by Anna Hazare's anti-corruption agitation that evoked huge public response across the country, PNS feels it stands a chance to cleanse the system.
"The PNS will contest the 2012 civic election. The objective is to accomplish goals of clean politics and people-centric governance. PNS will select, screen and support worthy, clean, ethical and socially committed candidates. Those who want to contest polls under our banner should contact on 9823117434 or mail to punens@gmail.com," said Vivek Velankar, one of the founder members of the organisation.
He added that under the 74th constitutional amendment, elected PNS corporators will hold citizens' meetings (ward sabhas) regularly, inviting suggestions from citizens and reporting updates on works undertaken.
The PNS will give voters 'Right to Recall' with citizens' discretion. All selected candidates will be asked to submit a 'letter of resignation' to this forum while filing their election nominations. If the corporator fails to perform, this resignation will be accepted by the forum.
"The PNS wants to nominate clean and active citizens, activists as candidates. We plan to contest maximum seats," said Velankar.
PNS corporator will have a minimum of 90% attendance and participate fully in the PMC's general body meetings. He or she will always insist on legal or criminal action against a PMC employee or officer, should they be proven guilty in any matter and will not protect a wrongdoer, he added.
PNS will oppose expenditure on study tours, festivals and other frivolous expenses from public funds. Work on civic projects such as roads, drainage, water distribution and lights at the ward level will be keenly and diligently monitored for work quality and timeliness of completion, Velankar said.
