Phishing: Major threat to eCommerce/financial services

Banks or any eCommerce site asks you your identification before you do any transaction. However, how confident are you that you are providing your information to the right site?

According to a Gartner survey, financial losses due to phishing have risen to about $3.2 billion in 2007.

E-commerce is the No.1 victim of phishing attacks, accounting for about 51% of the total incidents. It’s followed by financial services at 47%, according to information available with the Department of Information Technology (DIT).

None of the currently known security technologies, including Hardware / Software Tokens provided by various vendors eliminate the problem of phishing (which is a main source of identity theft) as their current technologies do not provide 2-way (mutual) authentication.
